Hello you lovely people! Today let's take a deep dive into some of my all-time favorite materials and patterns. These gems not only add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space, but also come with rich histories that make them timeless. 🏛️✨
HERRINGBONE: The Timeless Pattern
Starting off strong! Herringbone features a distinctive V-shaped weaving pattern that has been a beloved design choice since the Roman Empire, where it was initially used in road paving for its stability. Over time, this pattern transitioned into interior design, offering a classic yet dynamic aesthetic.
Though similar to the Chevron pattern, herringbone differs in that its pieces are rectangular blocks, whereas chevron's pieces are cut at a 45-degree angle. I prefer herringbone over chevron for this very reason; the broken zigzag of herringbone adds a movement that chevron just can't match (in my not-so-humble opinion). Today, herringbone is a versatile choice for flooring, backsplashes and even textiles.
To have hardwood herringbone flooring with a gorgeous patina is my DREAM flooring! (I just want to feel like I live in a French chateau, OK?!)
MARBLE: The Epitome of Luxury
Oh, marble! My one true love. Marble has been synonymous with luxury and grandeur since ancient times. From the Parthenon in Greece to the Taj Mahal in India, marble has been the material of choice for creating iconic structures.
In modern interior design, marble's natural beauty and unique veining make it a popular choice for countertops, flooring, and accent pieces. Its timeless appeal ensures it remains a staple in elegant home designs. It's perfect for a luxe feel with an organic, natural touch. While marble is known for being delicate, I believe that a home shouldn’t stay too precious—let it age with you! Each groove or stain tells the stories of our lives.
To have a statement marble EVERYTHING is my dream! Haha not actually—I always have to restrain myself in my home to not make everything marble. But I do love marble that looks like art that you can live in.
GOLD: A Touch of Glamor
Gold has symbolized wealth and opulence for centuries. Used in everything from jewelry to architecture, gold's warm, radiant hue adds a touch of glamor to any space. In contemporary interiors, gold accents are perfect for lighting fixtures, hardware, and decorative pieces, offering a luxurious and chic vibe without overwhelming the room.
Gold’s versatility allows it to blend seamlessly with various design styles. Its reflective quality can brighten a room and add a sense of depth and dimension. While some may fear that gold can be too bold or ostentatious, when used thoughtfully, it can create a balanced and sophisticated aesthetic.
In my own designs, I love incorporating gold accents through antiques like frames or mirrors. Antique gold mirrors are my kryptonite—I have seven in my apartment already!
ORNATE MOLDING: Classic Elegance
Ornate molding, with its intricate designs, has added depth and character to interiors since the Renaissance. This decorative element can transform a plain room into a sophisticated space. Whether it's crown molding, baseboards, or chair rails, incorporating ornate molding into your home brings a touch of classic elegance and craftsmanship.
I am constantly impressed by all the inventive and creative ways to use moldings, in more traditional or modern ways. I am a fan of molding that sparks conversations!
Not gonna lie, I would add molding to every room in my house, the hard part is not getting carried away with a different style in each room lol.
HOUNDSTOOTH: Bold & Stylish
Houndstooth, with its distinctive checkered pattern, originates from Scottish woven cloth from the 1800s. This bold pattern adds a stylish and dynamic element to any room. Whether used in upholstery, rugs, or accent pieces, houndstooth brings a sense of modernity and flair while maintaining a classic appeal.
I love the warmth and coziness of houndstooth, while still feeling upscale, and classy. I love to add some fun to houndstooth through color and size of the pattern. It can actually be quite versatile!
Like, do I want a pink houndstooth rug? Yes, have I searched for one and had no luck, sadly yes. But I won't give up hope just yet 😉.
VELVET: Luxurious Comfort
Velvet, known for its soft texture and rich colors, has been associated with luxury since the Middle Ages. This fabric adds depth and comfort to any space, making it a popular choice for sofas, curtains, and pillows. Velvet's ability to catch and reflect light gives it a unique sheen, adding an element of glamour to your interiors.
I love velvet for especially for curtains and couches, it is SO soft to the touch and more durable than you would think. Using it on things you touch a lot really adds luxury in your daily life.
Plus! My cat can't destroy velvet very easily so that is the ultimate win in my book!
Incorporating these materials into your home not only enhances the aesthetic but also adds charm to even the most builder grade of homes.
